Ag science fair scheduled
NEWARK, Del. - As part of the
University of Delaware's 150th
birthday celebration, an
agricultural science fair for young
people will be a special feature of
the annual Farm and Hgpe Field
Day Aug. 10 at the university’s
Georgetown substation.
Individuals and groups may
enter exhibits, and will compete
for cash prizes.
Exhibitors must have turned 12
years old by July 1, 1983, and must
not have completed high school
prior to June, 1983.
They must assemble and display
their own exhibits, which may not
be larger than 30 inches deep, 30
inches long, and 36 inches high.
Exhibits must be in place from 10
a.m. until 8 p.m. on Field Day.
Ad youths are eligible regardless

markets will open on

later than originally
planned, the U.S.
Department of

seven categories, each with a $3O

entomology; plant diseases; plant
nutrition; soil science; animal
science; agricultural engineering;
and agricultural economics and
marketing.
Prizes will be awarded at Field
Day .following the 5 p.m. dinner.
Exhibitors must be present to
receive an award.
Entry blanks may be obtained
from county extension offices in
Newark, Dover or Georgetown,
and must be returned by July 29.

from Penn State. Items of interest
are commercial com hybrids and
soybean varieties; nitrogen fer

varieties and weed control; potato
varieties, breeding and insect
control; double-crop soybeans,
snap beans and lima beans; sweet
com hybrids; tomato and pepper
trials; flower trials.

Announcing the delay
now, McMillan said, will
give industry more tune
for orderly changes in
season planning and
timely placement of
personnel. The
possibility of a delay, he
said, was anticipated
and recommended at
the June 24 meeting of
the Flue-Cured Tobacco
Advisory Committee, at
which opening dates
were originally set.
McMillan said a
survey of the tobacco
producing area in
dicates that a
marketing delay this
season will not ad
versely affect most
producers because an
unusually cool spring
has resulted in a late
maturing crop. A few
farmers in the old belt
said they would be in
convenienced by the
action.
