How To Save Hot Water
Here are some ways that the
consumption of hot water can be
reduced any time a faucet is
turned on whether it is for
showering, hair shampooing, hand
washing or the like. Without
sacrificing cleanliness or comfort,
1 would like to suggest that you
consider using cold or cooler
temperatures whenever possible in
the interest of conserving energy
and costs.
* Encourage family members to
take quick showers instead of tub
baths. Considerably less hot water
can be used, in many instances,
about half as much as a hath.
* Consider installing some
device that reduces the water flow
at the shower head to save on the
amount of hot water used and the
energy required to heat it. There
are different types available.
A flow restrictor placed In the
pipe of the shower head is an
inexpensive and easy-to-install
unit that reduces the amount of
watei flow from the pipe to' an
adequate three to four gallons per
minute.
There are water-saving heads
that screw onto the shower arm.
In addition to reducing the water
flow, some models can cut off the

* Letting hot water run con
tinuously while shampooing the
hair, shaving or washing hands is a
needless waste. Close the drain
and fill the basin instead.
* Stress to family members the
importance of tufning a hot water
faucet or any faucet all the way off
as soon as they are finished using
water. Water is wasted by failing
to close the tap all the way.
* Repair dripping faucets and
pipe leaks promptly. Adrip of one
drop per second can waste almost
two gallons of hot water a day plus
the energy used to heat it. That
totals approximately 700 gallons in
a year!
Undercover Help For Every Bed
A mattress pad or cover, while
not as glamorous as some of its
other bedfellows, is a necessity for
every bed. The pad provides a
smooth, comfortable sleep sur
face. It also protects, and adds
years of life to the mattress and is
easy to keep clean.
Mattress pads are usually white
with a quilted ticking made of a
blend of cotton and a man-made
fabric or all man-made. The
cushioning materials are generally
the same 'man-made fabrics as

those used for pillows. Some are of
continuous filament polyester
which one manufacturer claims
will not break up, matt or lump as
do the chopped and bonded fills. It
becomes obvious then that a prime
consideration when purchasing
mattress pads is to look for those
that resist compression, that
bounce back into shape and will not
matt or lump.
The type of pad quilting is
another consideration. The newest
method of quilting mattress pads is
by sonic sound. Called “Pinsonic
quilting,” the process uses ultra
sonic sound rather than threads to
join the fabrics together to produce
a quilted pattern with thermally
bonded joints.
Examine the mattress pad to be
sure there are no breaks, tears or
separations in the joints joining the
face fabric to' the fiber back and
lining fabric. For pads quilted with
thread, the type and length of the
stitching thread needs to be
checked. Long and floating stit
ches may catch and break, thus
causing the matting to mat and
bunch up.
Quilted mattress pads offer the
advantage of machine washing
and drying. Frequent laundering
keeps the covers clean and
minimizes staining. Care in
structions should be checked for
recommended washing
procedures. Generally, mattress
covers can be washed using the
same procedures as those followed
for washing and drying sheets.
Queen or king size pads may have
to be washed one at a time because
of their size.
There are other types of mat
tress pads or protective covers
available that may not be machine
washable or dryable.

heat can damage them.
For children’s beds, an alter
native to the standard quilted pad
is flannelette on vinyl or rubber.
Flannelette mattress pads are
waterproof, reversible and
machine washable. They should
never be put in the dryer; vinyl
and rubber are heat sensitive.
Flannelette can also be bought by
the yard.
Latex and urethane foam top
pers provide cushioning to a
mattress that Is too firm. Pads
range in thickness from one to five
inches. They come in soft, medium
and firm. Since they cannot be
drycleaned or washed, they should
be protected by a washable cover.
Sometimes, an old mattress can
be improved in appearance or the
lumpy surfaces smoothed out with
the use of a fabric/foam mattress
cover. It should have a drawstring
or elastic edge for a tight fit.
Fabric/foam mattress covers are
not washable, so they should be
protected by a mattress pad.

TROPICAL SANDWICHES
11/2 cups cottage cheese
1/2 cup dairy sour cream
1 cup finely diced ham
2/3 cup diced celery
2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
dash pepper
6 slices whole wheat bread
butter
fresh spinach leaves, washed and
chilled
12 pineapple slices, chilled
toasted coconut
Beat cottage cheese until almost
smooth; beat in sour cream until
fluffy. Fold in ham, celery, chives,
seasoned salt and pepper. Chill 1 to
2 hours to allow flavors to blend. To
serve, spread (me side of bread
with butter. Cover buttered side of
bread with spinach leaves.
Arrange 2 slices of pineapple over
spinach. Spoon cottage cheese
mixture over pineapple. Sprinkle
with toasted coconut. Serve im
mediately.
