EQUIPMENT, me.
Many stores display racks of
seeds, garden aids, and garden
miracles as unpulse sales items at
this time of year. Before buying
any of these products, know what
they can do, advises University of
Delaware Extension horticulturist
Charles Dunham. The convenience
of a particular item may or may
not be worth the tune and effort
saved.
No gadget can substitute for all
the factors necessary to grow a
plant successfully from seed:
light, nutrients, growing medium,
water and optimum temperature.

Soil-free mixes, such as Jiffy
mix, Eedi-Earth and Pro-mix are
combinations of peat moss, ver
miculite and perlite in various
proportions. Being weed-seed and
disease free, they’re excellent for
indoor seeding and houseplants.
Some contain nutrients in the form
of slow-release fertilizer. They’re
available in small to 3-cubic-feot
bags. Since these mixes are hard to
wet, be sure they’re full of
moisture before seeding or tran
splanting.
Combinations of some of these
products are also available, the
specialist says. Before buying one
that contains seeds, compare its
price to that of good quality packet
seed. Remember, these gadgets
can’t take the place of good gar
dening practices.
