Swap Shop Bargains

A couple of weeks ago. we suggested the use
of Real Seals on the "big blue billboards” of
dairy farms to help promote real dairy
products. One manufacturer has taken us up
on the idea.
Among the Letters to Lancaster Farming
this week is one from the Sales and Marketing
Manager of Sealstor, which will start making
the Real Seal available for use on its silo
structures. The letter can be found on Page
Al 2.
Another letter comes from the Hickory Hill
Farm of the Armacost family of Upperco, Md.
Their dairy farm is the location of frequent
tours and the Armacost family takes full ad
vantage during each visit to promote milk.
Reproduced with the letter is one page from
the family's PR brochure, which is handed out
and stresses the wholesomeness of milk.
Also, the accompanying photo was taken
during one of the tours. Note how the “tour
guide" is dressed to help promote milk, too.
Incidentally, the Armacosts can be justly
proud of their farm brochure. It is very well
done and puts a lot of brochures that I’ve seen
at business and industry to shame.
A farm wife has a suggestion in another
letter, which is controversial to say the least.
But it raises some good points and deserves
an answer. So, how about it -- you planners of
Ag Progress Days and the Farm Show - would
you consider banning soft drinks at these ag
events?
And, the dairy money idea on Page Al 2 --
passed along by another reader -- is not
exactly new and has been used before. But
perhaps its time has come again to help get
across the REAL message. So, if your bills are
paid by money from milk and you've a mind to

THE SECURITY
OF CALEB

Background Scripture:
Numbers 13: 1-6, 30-33; 14:24;
32:10-12; Joshua 14:6-15.
Devotional Reading:
Acts 11:19-26.
Shammua, Shaphat, Igal,
Hoshea, Palti, Gaddiel, Gaddi,
Ammiel, Sethur, Nahbi, Caleb,
Joshua, and Geuel; what do these
twelve men have on common?
The answer is that their names all
appear in the Bible, the 13th
chapter of the Book of Numbers.
And ten of the twelve wish that
their names had not been
preserved for us to read today!-
For, with the exception of Caleb
and Joshua, their listing in
Numbers is one of shame.
At the time, it must have seemed
that it would not come out that way
for them. Sent by Moses to bring
back a report that would enable
Israel to decide to invade or not,
these ten men had been unanimous
in their verdict:
“The land...is a land that
devours its inhabitants; and all the
people that we saw in it are men of
great stature...and we seemed to
ourselves like grasshoppers.”
Majority Report
It was a majority report, for only
Caleb and Joshua disagreed with
it. Furthermore, it was a report
that the people accepted and based
upon it was their negative reaction
to this proposed venture: “Would
that we had died in the land of
Egypt! Or would that we had died
in tbif wilderness! ...would it not be

To Keep Pesticide Records
Today’s battle with insects,
fungus, rodents and weeds
requires the use of many different
chemicals. It is important to keep
an accurate record of any
chemicals used. This would in
clude the date, name of material,
application rate, field number and
even the direction the wind is
blowing. This might save a lot of
trouble and loss of income in case
there is some question.
Many food items are being
checked by Food and Drug
representatives for pesticide
residue. It is possible to find
residue even where the producer
followed regulations and every
recommended practice. Your
record would be very important m
these cases. In any event, always
follow label instructions.
To Practice Good Sanitation
The prevention and control of
various diseases start with a good
sanitation program. This is also
true in the elimination of serious
fly problems. We are experiencing
a fly build-up in some areas. Here
again, the place to start is to clean
up the premises and eliminate all
breeding places. This practice
along with the use of approved
insecticides should keep flies to a
minimum.
Kesidual wall sprays, fly baits,
space sprays and larvacides can
be used to eliminate fly problems.

The ten had swayed the crowd with
their report. No one had paid much
heed to Joshua and Caleb.
So, although they had prevailed
for a moment, they soon would
regret the report they had brought
back from Canaan. The people had
hailed their gloomy report, but
God did not. In fact, because of
their report on Canaan, they and
most of the rest of the people of
Israel would be doomed to wander
in the wilderness for another 40
years and die there. Only their
children would get to receive the
Promised Land.
The essential difference between
Caleb and the ten other spies was
that Caleb’s report took God into
account in assessing what lay
before them. Yes, there were
difficulties in Canaan. Yes, there
would be hard times and difficult
challenges. Yes, the people of
Canaan were formidable (although
not the proverbial “ten-feet tall”
that the 10 spies reported). But
there’s more to the picture than
that.
The Lord is With Us
On their own, the spies had
realized that Canaan was too much
for them. But Caleb and Joshua
had looked at Canaan through
different eyes and they saw that,
though the obstacles were great,
God would be there, too. And his
presence would make all the dif
ference. The sin of the ten spies
was not that they had reported
what they saw, but they didn’t see
enough. They looked at Canaan
and did not put God into the pic
ture.
Caleb was probably no leas in
terested in security than the other
ten spies. But his security was-to
be found, not in avoiding obstacles,
but in depending upon God to help
him surmount those obstacles. It is
still the only security which God
offers us.
plants do better if they’re fertilized
- but many ask when is the best
time to feed shrubs. One important
thing to remember is that shrubs
need feeding immediately
following their flowering period.
For small shrubs, use one half a
handful of a complete fertilizer
such as a 5-10-10 or similar
analysis. The fertilizer should be
placed on the surface of the soilfi
around the plants and lightly raked
in.
After you’ve applied the plant
food to the soil, it should be soaked
in with ram or a healthy watering.
Larger plants, of course, may be
given a larger amount of plant
food.
Once a plant is firmly and fully
established, and in good growing
condition, then it may not need
regular fertilizer application.
