The other week my daughter
Judy, who lives in Palmyra,
phoned to ask if I’d like to go with
her to see Longwood Gardens the
next day. Since the next day was
Saturday and my husband has
hired part-time help, I felt that I
had to stay home and cook a nice
meal for them.
So we decided to go that very
afternoon as I had just finished
cleaning our four bedrooms and
still had some energy left. She
arrived within an hour and we
started for Kennett Square. The
drive there was pleasant as many
spring flowers were in bloom.
After she paid our admission, we
strolled all afternoon through some
of the 350 acres that are open to the
public. As they have 190 full-time
employees, everything was im
maculate and oh, so very colorful
with azaleas and rhododendrons
everywhere. We both took quite a
few pictures of the flowering beds,

the waterfalls and the Italian
Water Garden.
We spent about an hour in the
Pierce-duPont House that was
started in 1730. It contained fur
niture from both families. Only in
1906 did Pierre S. duPont buy this
land'to save the unusual trees that
the Pierce family had planted.
These ornamental trees were
collected all along the Eastern
seaboard.
I always enjoy seeing the Con
servatory with its lush tropical
plants that grow within three-and
a-half acres of heated, glass en
closed gardens. I’m hoping that the
picture of the wall of orchids will
show their true beauty.
The one thing that impressed me
during our long walk through the
different gardens were the people
that we met. They were smiling!
Where else could you go and have
strangers greet you with a friendly
nod? The trip was quite relaxing.
