Sunday remarked, “I am glad I
have two young men who want to
farm,” Sunday, a 30-year veteran
of the dairy industry feels he needs
to slow down a bit. However, in
40 yeors of proof
Since 1940, Gehl has been building field
choppers and forage harvesters with one
thought in mind ...performance. And, year
after year, thousands of satisfied owners
prove that we know how to use that special
ized experience to build better machines.
Today, Gehl concentrates those 40 years of
chopping know-how into three fuel-efficient,
high-capacity forage harvesters:
Capacity King 1250. The largest capacity
pull-type harvester on the market. Gehl's
exclusive 24” spinner delivery system keeps
forage moving with no cross augers to plug.
The giant, 9-knife, 25Vi” cylinder gives a
quality cut. And the new cutterbar adjustment
is the easiest anywhere. In-head hydraulic
knife sharpener and electric controls are
standard too.
New mid-range 1000 gives you the high
capacity you’d expect from the big 21"
cylinder and fast spinner delivery system.
Like the 1250, standard features include the

Fuel saver 750 tackles just about any
chopping job. Uses less horsepower per ton
chopped than many bigger harvesters. Uses
less fuel. The 8-knife cutterhead is set into
the blower compartment for smooth, contin

in-head hydraulic knife sharpener for even
more cutting efficiency.

And, as Sunday scanned the herd,
he pointed out their first two-year
old to ever produce a 1000 pounds
of fat.
“With all the problems facing a
young man going into the farming
business, including my son and
son-in-law, I have told them it
takes a real committment.
However, what business today
doesn’t,” said the veteran farmer.

said Sunday, one faces the same
problems that the bigger dairyman
and the smaller dairyman face.
There will always be a need for the
cows and the dairyman regardless
of his size, he believes.
Many farmers feel that the big
conglomerates are going to eat
them up, but I feel if any dairyman
has made it this far through
economic hardships, he has done
his homework, he said.
“Farming is a business, it was 30
years ago and it still is today,” said
Sunday.
Although Sunday noted today’s
farmers are working with more
volume, the methods of operation
are still the same. For example, he
said we would not have built this
new barn if we would not be able to
realize a profit on such an in
vestment. The same is true 30

Sunday feels that the dairy in
dustry has to realize that they are
supplying a different consumer
than 30 years ago. Our consumer
market is cheeses, yogurt, and
skim milk market.”
Sunday said his wife noted
recently that the busiest section of
the local food market was the dairy
section. And he added, “When
people are checking out of the
supermarket, how many people
leave without a dairy product of
some type. Usually none.”
Nevertheless said Sunday I don’t
have all the answers to the surplus
problems. “I believe advertising is
very good for the industry, but I
don’t feel that it is the total answer.
I think we have to find new
products to supply this new health
oriented and fast-paced society.”
