Water supply
is good
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Water supplies should
be good to excellent for
most of the West this
summer, according to
the season’s final
coordinated report
issued today by the U.S.
Departments of
Agriculture and
Commerce.
Peter C. Myers, chief
of USDA’s Soil Con
servation Service, said
the potential for high
water still exists in
some lowland areas of
California, Colorado,
New Mexico, Nevada
and Utah.
April brought heavy
precipitation to much of
the West - in excess of
150 percent of normal -
particularly in
California, Nevada,
southern Utah and
northern New Mexico.
Mountain snowpacks
set record highs on 14
sites along the east
slope of the Sierras.
Only in Montana and
the Cascades of Oregon
and Washington was
snowpack reported to be
below normal.
Reservoir storage
remains above normal
and should offset most
water shortages.
Nevada has been forced
to release water in
anticipation of high
snowmelt runoff.
