Those “gorgeous house” publications inevitably leave me feeling terribly inferior, probably because life among the rural natives here is so unlike those picture-perfect house displays that are always printed. I mean, when have you ever seen a gorgeous house phota layout that included manure-encrusted shoes beside the door, baseball bats littering the office or floors tex tured in hay and chaff? Maybe it was the colorful cover that caught my eye. Colorful quilted pillows accented a bright, cheery room filled with lush hanging-basket plants and blooming amaryllis. White waiting for the schoolbus during one of the daily downpours, 1 casually began leafing through the magazine. Lo and behold, the first ad vertisement inside the cover sported a statue of a goose and rounded-full baskets of green and red apples. A few pages back 1 found a layout on coordinating ac cessories. By golly, here were fabric and wall designs displayed with accessories that reached out to my heart: a goat knick-knack, cabbage head arranged in a basket instead of flowers, a basket of pristine white eggs, and old fashioned glass bottles filled with milk. Hot diggety! “Country chic" is the hottest thing in interior decorating. Further flipping through the pages brought me to a real winner. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 28,1883—85 A former chicken coop had been remodeled into the coziest little country cottage you’d ever want, including the room featured on the cover that had caught my at tention. Tastefully arranged through the cottage were country-chic ac cessories, like old wooden hay forks, clay pottery, statuettes of assorted farm animals and the classic red geraniums. The article was so intriguing that 1 could ignore another one that followed, stressing beautiful bathrooms with easy chairs, sunken tubs and fireplaces. (Imagine, bathrooms actually do come without permanently installed sneakers, crumpled towels on the floor, and makeup items strewn across the sink.) But, back to country, chic. A closer look revealed that this latest “look” doesn’t come cheap. For instance, a decorator, one-of-a kind wall hanging, shaped like a pig and custom painted, in acrylics, can be had for a mere ninety bucks. I know where you can get a real one for that. Maybe less if she doesn’t keep her little snout out of the flowerbeds. But the real clincher that en deared country chic to me was one small photograph that displayed a particular type of sofa. Beneath the sofa was a soccer ball. Country chic doesn’t have litter, or clutter, strewn over the place. Those are “accessories.” Welcome to our world of country chic. Please don’t fall over the ac cessories.
