The Ethrel product, made by
Union Carbide, has been used for
many years as a ripening agent in
certain fruits and vegetables. It is
identical to the product, Cerone,
for which Union Carbide is seeking
national labeling from EPA as an
anti-lodging agent. Presently,
Cerone is only labeled for ex
perimental use.
Ethrel can be applied at one to
two pints per acre from the time
that the last leaf (flag leaf)
becomes just visible until the time
that the seed head emerges from
the boot. When the seed head
becomes visible, application
should be halted. The product
works by reducing plant height and
increasing straw strength. By
avoiding lodging, better har
vesting yields are possible and
crop quality is improved.
However, if rust is present,
Ethrel may enhance the disease.
Ethrel should be considered for
use where lodging prone varieties
are planted in areas of high
nitrogenfertility.

HARRISBURG —An emergency
exemption has been declared by
the Pennsylvania Secretary of
Agriculture permitting the use of
Ethephon (Ethrel) as a growth
regulator to prevent lodging in
wheat and barley.
Hie emergency exemption was
declared because of the critical
time limitation for still using the
pesticide in order to reduce lodging
in crops that are nearing ripening
and harvesting.
