One morning this week it was 30
degrees and quite windy and didn’t
seem a bit like spring. I expect it
will take a while for my sugar peas
to come up even if I did plant them
on March 17. The next few days
were rainy and the Conestoga
River was bank full and quite
muddy. But on my kitchen counter
sat a bunch of forsythia blooms
and through my windows I saw
robins hopping around in the
meadow. Little Johnny Jump-Ups,
similar to a small pansy, bloom at
the edge of my garden and I picked
some for the table.
My scallions or green onions are
long and slender and the few weeks
that I left in the garden all winter
are starting to grow too. Everyday
we have dandelion salad-this way I
can weed the yard and have a fresh
salad too.
A bird has chosen my front door
as a good site for a nest-at least I

think that is why I find a pile of
twigs and dry grass laying on the
mat twice a day. Of course it
comes and goes so quietly that I
never see it as we have a blind
door.
The other Sunday afternoon,
when I walked into my kitchen, I
noticed a small hissing sound. At
first it didn’t bother me too much
but when it continued I decided we
must find its origin. When my
husband shut off the water supply,
it stopped. What to do? Surely not
rip up the floor and with it my
beautiful linoleum as there is no
basement under our new kitchen.
My husband was kind enough to
think of another way to solve the
problem. He broke through the
foundation and the plumber was
able to climb in and replace the
copper pipe. The iris bed that I had
to dig up is now retarded but that’s
a small price to pay in order to
save my floor.
