WEST CHESTER - The Chester
County Conservation District
announced that sample amounts of
Crown Vetch seed will be made
available to non-profit and public
agencies, gave support to a
demonstration program for the use
of a no-till planter by Chester
County farmers, expressed con
cern about excess drainage from
the Pa. Turnpike damaging farm
land and accepted new cooperators
at its recent meeting.
Limited amounts of Crown Vetch
seed will be available to non-profit
and public organizations on a first
come, first-served basis. The seed
was obtained through a
cooperative effort with the Bureau
of Soil and Water Conservation and
PennDOT. Two, four, or six-pound
packages of the seed will be
available by placing an order and
paying $3.75 per lb.

Chester Conservation District offers

“These smaller quantities will
permit schools, churches,
watershed associations or town
ships to seed critical areas,”
Harold R. Kulp, Pottstown,
Chairman of the District, said.
“Municipalities should be using
vegetative protection when they
rebuild highways. The highway
departments should be using
Crown Vetch and other mulching
methods to protect road shoulders
during and after the construction,
period,” Kulp said.

Service of Cochranville, for far
mer’s trial use this spring, Mar

Farmers are invited to a
meeting at the Stoltzfus Farm
Service at 7 p.m. Monday to learn
more about no-till, study the
planter and reserve its use.
The Conservation District is
advocating the use of no-till and
minimum-till conservation
systems to reduce the amount of
soil movement on a fanner’s fields
as well as reduce or eliminate the
soil loss to neighboring property.
Kulp appointed a committee of
Elbert Wells, Harry Barnett,
Robert Hodge, Charles Harris and
Ralph Heister to select a county
farmer that has an outstanding
conservation program on his farm.

the Turnpike should contact the
District to determine how many
run-off problems exist in the
County.
