Report supplied by USDA
Compared to last week’s close.
Slaughter Steers and Heifers .50-
1.00 higher, advance coming at
early week. Slaughter Cows firm to
1.00 higher. Slaughter Bulls
steady.
Early advances in dressed beef
prices and a good demand were
prominent factors for higher
prices on Monday, but by mid
week, declines in dressed beef
prices turned most buyers on the
cautious side. However, a few
plants were in need of cattle for
immediate requirements and on
Tuesday and Wednesday, these
plants were forced to buy at prices
equivalent to Monday’s advance.
Steers comprised 44 pet. of the
week’s receipts, Heifers 35 pet.,
Cows 10 pet. and Feeders 10 pet.

incomes under <lO,OOO.
The idea is similar to the Wick
check program, which gives so
much milk, cheese, cereal etc. to
mothers and children under 5
years. A card would allow a family
one gallon of milk per week per
person, two lbs. of cheese per
month per person and two lbs. of
butter per month per person. Also,
the limits on the Wick program
could be increased in the dairy
area. The child’s age limit could be
moved from five years to six
years, since most children are six
before they are on the school lunch
program. We’d have a healthier
nation, a lower milk surplus and be
helping those in need.

AND OTHER OPINIONS
(Continued from Page A 10)
The real problem is the extra
milk, not the paying of the $l3/cwt.
for the milk. Let’s look what would
happen if a farmer would Hump
one 100-cwt. tank of milk per
month at |l3/cwt. He would have
approximately 14. milk pickups for
the month (14Xfl3X100=|18,200).
If the deduction goes through, the
farmers would get less money even
with a whole month of pickups
(15X112X100=118,000). This would
help cut down on the surplus milk.
The farmer would be making out a
bit better than with the dairy
deduction.
Please, consider these ideas.
They won’t solve the whole surplus
milk problem but would help.
