The Pa. Farm Museum of Landis
Valley is located just a few miles
from our dairy farm. Many years
ago, before the state acquired the
Museum, Grandfather Shreiner
took me to visit George and Henry
Landis. They started the collection
of objects which were related to
farm like before 1900. Their home
was crowded with artifacts and
with cats - they were everywhere.
The Farm Museum has now
grown to include many restored
historic buildings and new exhibit
facilities. Among these are farm
buildings, a country store, a
firehouse, pottery and print shops,

Craft Days are held during the fall
and they help to bring history alive
for the visitor.
They also hold a senes of craft
classes during the year. These
include many almost forgotten
arts. Some classes are tinsmithmg,
splint basketry, fraktur, rye straw
basketry, counted thread sampler
design, patchwork quilting and rug
braiding.
It is this last mentioned class
that I enrolled in this month. There
are 17 women and 1 man who spend
a few hours each week under a
very able teacher. Our first project
was a chair pad. It is a pleasure to
learn the proper way to make one -
not a stitch shows anyone, and it is
completely reversible. This has
caused me to look more carefully
at the chau- pads and rugs that I’ve
purchased at sales over the years.
My problem is finding used wool
of the same weight and with
pleasing colors to use together. It
certainly takes time to np apart
dresses, slacks, skirts and coats.
However, I’m quite pleased with
the results so far. Whether or not
I'll continue this work next winter
remains to be seen.
