Though the program was started
and still remains as the youth
phase of the Cooperative Ex
tension Service, 15 percent of its
members derive from central city
areas. Other enrollment per
centages include: rural non-farm,
50 percent; farm, 16 percent;
towns, 13 percent; and suburbs, 6
percent.
Sixty-eight percent of the youths
involved in 4-H are between the
ages of 8 and 12.
According to Gov. Thornburgh,
“4-H provides our youth with the
knowledge and skills that will
assist them in future careers, and
gives them the opportunity to
expand their horizons beyond local
communities through involvement
in state, national and international
programs that promote un
derstanding and goodwill.
“Through activities in our
communities, Pennsylvania 4-H is
also helping advance important
efforts in community develop
ment, energy conservation,
nutrition, farm practices and the
