D22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 19,1983 Weis honors growers LEWISBURG At a dinner meeting at the Country Cupboard Restaurant in Lewisburg, more than 100 Pennsylvania fruit and vegetable growers were honored by Weis Markets. The annual Grower-Distributor meeting is held to give recognition to the growers and show appreciation for the efforts and contributions they have made in furthering agriculture. George Michalak, Vice President for Weis Markets, was joined by Pennsylvania officials and legislators in reviewing the efforts in agriculture during the past year. Michalak stated that the grower, distributor and consumer are all links in a chain that is symbolic of the food distribution system, a system that is the most sophisticated and efficient in the world. , Secretary of Agriculture Penrose Hallowell told the growers that, although he and his depart ment are actively working to in crease export of Pennsylvania farm fresh products, currently there exists greater potential for marketing local agricultural 1. Michalak concluded the meeting by discussing the “Continuing Challenge of the 80’s” and was optimistic for local agriculture in 1983. The positive economic signs, but more importantly the con tinuing aggressive promotion of agriculture at all levels and the striving for excellence in quality of goods marketed, would provide for the continuance of agriculture as the Keystone of Pennsylvania’s economy.
