Maryland receives
tobacco grants
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Representatives of the R. J.
Reynolds Tobacco Company,
Winston-Salem, N.C., visited
College Park in mid-February to
present checks totalling $9,000 to
agricultural administrators at the
University of Maryland.
Of that amount, $4,000 will be
used to support a new tobacco pro
duction education and computer
training program by the univer
sity’s Cooperative Extension
Service, while $5,000 was ear
marked for a discretionary grant,
to be used by the dean of the
College of Agriculture.

HARRISBURG - Milk
production in Pennsylvania during
January 1963 totaled 782 million
pounds, up three percent from a
year earlier, according to the
Pennsylvania Crop Reporting
Service.
The number of milk cows in the
Commonwealth during January
average 738,000 head, up 4,000 head
from a year ago. Milk production
per cow averaged 1,060 pounds in

intended for enhancement of
academic programs in the
university’s College of
Agriculture. -
Since 1977, R.J. Reynolds has
contributed $84,876 to help support
tobacco research, Extension and
academic programs at the
University of Maryland. The
company’s contributions to similar
activities at land-grant univer
sities in all tobacco-producing
states have totaled approximately
$4 million since 1962.

Milk production in the nation
during January 1983 totaled 11.3
billion pounds, two percent more
than January 1962. Total milk cows
averaged 11.1 million head,
slightly higher than a year earlier.
January production per cow
averaged 1,021 pounds, 13 pounds
above a year earlier.
