livestock markets, hogs are again
profitable. Beyond good housing
and proper nutrition, a sound
health care program is one of the
best ways to insure profitability.
Here are some health tips from
the experts at the Animal Health
Institute, Alexandria, Va.„.
Breeding stock
Work with your veterinarian to
develop a health care plan.
Commit it to paper and follow it
closely. A series of vaccinations
before and during pregnancy may
be required to prevent the
following diseases: leptospirosis,
erysipelas. Type C clostridial
enteritis, TGE, and atrophic
rhinitis, among others.
Federally licensed vaccines
conform to rigorous government
standards. Look for the U.S.
Veterinary license number on the
product That’s your assurance
that these products have been
thoroughly tested. Keep records on
the types of products you use, the
manufacturer, the serial numbers,
and the expiration dates.
When more than me biological
product is to be administered, do
not mix the two substances unless

specified on the label. The two
biologicals can become con
taminated when mixed and may
not provide the desired immunity.
Never dilute a biological product
unless specifically called for on the
label. And never mix a biological
with an antibiotic.
A series of vaccines is also called
for during the first few days of a
baby pig’s life. These vaccines
protect against pseudorabies (in
states where pseudorabies vaccine
is legal), atrophic rhinitis, and
pneumonia, among others.
During the high stress period of
weaning, pigs are again vac
cinated for disease; antibiotics are
added to the feed to prevent
disease as well. Later, wormers
will be added.
To insure safe, efficient use of
these and other drugs, the Animal
Health Institute advises:
Feed or administer the' right
dote. Whether it’s a vaccine,
warmer, or feed additive, it’s
important to provide the right
amount. Dosages are scientifically
determined for effective and safe
use after years of research and
examination by both the

The old adage “if a little bit is
good, then a whole lot more is
better" does not apply to animal
drugs. By the same token, it is a
mistake to underdose. A hog
requires a precise amount of a
drug’s active substance in its
system to do the job.
For feeders, observe withdrawal
times if required before shipping.
Whether administering an animal
drug via feed, water, bolus, or
injection, be certain to observe the
withdrawal period before sending
the animal to market.
If you don’t, an illegal residue
could appear. That can cost you. If
just one animal contains illegal
residues, the entire shipment will
be held and tests run to determine
whether other animals contain
residues. If they do, you won’t be
paid for them. You could also be
prosecuted and face stiff fines
and/or jail sentences.
Read the label. Even if you’re
not in doubt, you should check the
label, because label instructions
can change. Then take time to
follow directions. That’s what the
eyeclock symbol on the label is
telling you.
