FARM SHOW - With her crown
barely eight hours old, Penn
sylvania Angus Queen Chris Shive
from York County entered the
show ring early Wednesday
morning for the annual Farm Show
Angus competition to begin her
‘official’ year of promoting her
favorite breed, posing for pictures
and handing out ribbons.
But whereas most queens are
content to view the event from the
sidelines, Chris just had to get
involved by juggling her ‘queenly’
duties with her desire to show her
own animals. ~

So between the distribution of
ribbons and the fever of the
competition, and the speedy
switching of a crown for an
exhibitor’s number, Chris had
little time to reflect on her
achievement from the night before
namely, her crowning.
“I’m still surprised. It’s just
something I’ve always wanted to
do,’’ she answers when asked how
she feels about her new role. “I go
to the banquet eve r y year and I’ve
known for quite r. while I wanted to
try for the title. ’

Seven Valleys, is quick to credit
her parents with the support she
needed to reach this honor, but it
was her grandfather, Daniel Shive,
which first instilled the ‘Angus
affair’ into her heart.
“One night when I was really
young, my grandfather stopped by
on his way home from a 4-H
meeting and announced he had
enrolled me in the club. So that
year I participated in the beef and
beef breeding projects, and I’ve
kept with it ever since," she
remembers.

But that one project nine years
ago, has since turned into 11
projects for this year alone.
"I’m involved in so many
projects, but the main three are
beef, public speaking and
poultry," she explains.
Now with a herd of nine cows,
Chris stays active as a director of
the Pa. Junior Angus Association,
the National Honor Society at
Susquehannock High School where
she is currently a junior, and the
all-school play.
In the future Chris hopes to
become a medical secretary and
an adult 4-H leader. But for the
near future, she wants to remain a
teen leader, and promote her
favorite breed as best she can.
"I’d like to attend all the shows I
can and I’d like to inform
everybody about beef. I think the
industry needs to promote beef
more,” she says. And with a smile,
she adds, “I eat a lot of beef.”
