As my daughter Judy had a few
days of vacation at the end of the
year, we decided to use one day to
visit the Pennsylvania German
exhibit at the Pennsylvania
Museum of Art
1 was very thankful that she was
willing to drive, as .the ex
pressways are not “my cup of
tea.” It took us almost four hours
to see the display of 333 pieces of
furniture, pottery, guns, docks.
0 coverlets and pictures. These
items covered the period from 168 S
to 1850. This is the period of time
from when the first settlers landed
and settled Germantown until they
spread across the state to our
western border in 1850.

manuscripts and woven into cloth
were brought grom the section of
middle Europe from which they
came. Of course, they were in
fluenced by their English, Irish
and Scottish neighbors.
The ink and water color on paper
were often written by
schoolteachers. Sometimes they
were copied by their pupils and
other times they were given to a
student as a reward for merit. I
have a small one, dated 1792 that I
believe was given to Allen’s three
times great grandmother, Barbara
Hershey. Often the fraktur
designer would be paid to draw a
birth, baptism, confirmation or
marriage certificate. Today these
brightly colored manuscripts are
highly valued.

The chests were made for both
men and woman and were painted
with unicorns, tulips and peacocks.
Woodworkers in Lancaster County
made many different household
items including benches, docks,
chairs and “bedsted stuff.” They
even made coffins for the local
people.
A full-scale house was shown
with an old iron stove, a tall case
dock, dough trough, hymnals and
, samplers. The show towels con
; tained intricate needlework and
were hung on the wall. Religion
I and education were important but
the center of the Pennsylvania
German Life and customs was the
home.
