Berkshire - Dennis Grumbine,
Myerstown, grand champion: C.
D. Winebark and Sons, R 1
Rochester Mills, reserve. The
Grumbine gilt, one of the best in its
breed ever to come to Farm Show,
later brought a record $BB5 in the
Berkshiresale. The previous breed
record set in 1900.
Chester White - James T.
Parlett, R 2 Airville, had both the
grand and reserve.
Ouroc - Dave Holloway, R 1 New
Freedom, had the grand champion
and Calvin Lazarus and Son of
Whitehall showed the reserve. A
Duroc breeder, Judge Shaffer
obviously favored the Holloway
gilt, commenting how she floated
over the concrete. The gilt’s dam
with grand champion Hampshire gilt
James T. Parlett, R 2 Airville, with the grand champion
Chester White gilt.
And lectures against crossbred boars
raised 45 pig& in four litters so
there’s proven production in her
pedigree. It was Holloway’s first
grand champ in six years at Farm
Show and marked the continuing
progress of another top-notch
young Duroc breeder in the in-,
dustry.
Hampshire - Blue Mt. View
Farms, R 3 Aimville, had both the
grand and reserve.
Landrace - Barbara Mummert,
Seven Valleys, showed the grand
champion and the reserve was
exhibited by Jay Blatt, R 2 Ann
ville.
Poland China - Barbara Mc-
Connell, Volant, showed the grand
and reserve.
Spotted Swine - Another of the
double winners with both grand
and reserve was Russell Kegg, R 1
Bedford. In his third year of
showing, it was his first top
placing. Kegg also had the best pen
of feeder pigs in the Lancaster
Stockyards Show last year.
Yorkshire - Tim Heagy,
Lebanon, exhibited the grand
champion and the reserve was
shown by Calvin Lazarus and Son,
Whitehall.
Shaffer liked the York grand
champion.
“If you paint her red. I’d take
her home,’’ he commented.
And he leaned heavily toward
the grand champion Berkshire and
the Duroc.
Grumbine’s Berks was only a
few days away from her due date
and was obviously heavy with pigs.
And Holloway’s Duroc, that later
brought $1,025 in the breed sale,
was held up as an example of what
gilts should look like - feminine
but with natural stoutness. She’s a
litter mate to the reserve cham
pion boar at KILE.
By county, Lebanon and York
had three grand champs and
Lawrence and Bedford had one
each.
In addition to mobility. Judge
Shaffer stressed the need for necks
on the gilts. He obviously didn’t
like neckless hogs whose heads go
right into their shoulders like a
linebacker or defensive tackle in
football.
And he also wanted a lot of their
tails up higher.
He likes power in his pigs but he
wants those females to look like
ladies, too.
“You not only play great football
in Pennsylvania (Penn State), but
you raise good hogs, too,” Shaffer
said.
“You breeders must be honest
with yourself and have pride.
“We don’t need those crossbred
boars.
“The biggest problem in
purebred circles is the reluctance
to make changes.
“Progress must be made.”
