Soybean farmers vote emergency funds for export promotion
ST. LOUIS, Mo. Soybean
farmers will invest an additional
$557,000 in checkoff funds during
1983 in eight emergency export
promotion programs. Approved by
farmer leaders on the American
Soybean Association board of
directors, the action is part of an
ASA move to generate increased
demand for U.S. soybeans and
return prices to profitable levels,
says ASA President 8.8.
Spratling, Jr.
The majority of the approved
programs focus on expanding
soybean oil utilization.
“Because of the large surplus of
oil stocks and the current low oil
price, the financial crunch is really
on the soybean oil side,” explains
Dennis Blankenship, ASA director
Soil map available from
Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK
Penn State’s College
of Agriculture has a soil
map for Pennsylvania
unlike anything
published elsewhere. It
is entitled the Land
Resources Map of
Pennsylvania and
features 153 soil groups.
First published in
1976, the map is issued
as an educational, non
profit function of the
agricultural Ex
periment Station, the
research division of the
College.
Robert J. Flipse,
assistant director of the
Station, said the Land
Resources Map brings
together factors of soil
depth, drainage,
available moisture, and
productive capacities of
soils.
The map has been
used widely by in
dustrial and community
planners. Dr. Flipse
commented. High
school and college
teachers find it helpful
in studying earth
sciences. It was
developed by Howard
W. Higbee, professor
emeritus of soil science,
who considers it vital
for soil and water
resources managers.
Copies are available
for $3.25, tax and
shipping included, from
Land Resources Map,
Department 6000,
University Park, PA
16802. Make check or
money order payable to
The Pennsylvania State
University. Allow at
least two weeks for
delivery. The map may
also be purchased
directly in room 204 of
the Agricultural Ad
ministration Building at
University Park. The
office is open from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday, except
holidays.
Multiple patterns and
colors are used to
portray the 153 soil
groups coded and
symbolized for iden
tification. Each soil unit
or group is evaluated by
16 characteristics. The
more important
characteristics are
depth, soil drainage
environment, geological
source of soil material,
available moisture,
plant rooting zones, and
dominant crop
of market development. “We need
significantly increase demand for
soybean oil in order to reduce
supplies and increase price.”
Included in the projects are a
major expansion of efforts to
promote non-food uses of soybean
oil in the U.S. This includes using
soybean oil as an agricultural crop
oil, as a grain dust suppressant and
as an industrial replacement for
petroleum oil.
Other newly approved projects
are soybean oil promotion cam
paigns in West Germany, Belgium,
Italy and Japan; a domestic
soybean oil education program for
dieticians and home economists
and a push to increase soybean oil
PL4BO and government credit
allocations.

“ASA’s biggest, most dramatic
change in export promotion is the
non-food emphasis in the U. 5.,”
says Klakenship. “Up till now,
ASA promotion activities in the
U.S. have been focused on food
uses of soybean oil. If the U.S.

increase worldwide promotion of
the industrial uses of soybean oil.”
