Gardner, professor of soils, Washington State University, Pullman, became president of the Soil Science Society of America last month at the society’s annual luncheon and awards program. He succeeds Robert G. Gast, University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Gardner’s principal research interests are in soil physics and soil water-plant relations. He has made many contributions, including measurement of soil water content using gamma ray and neutron attenuation, concurrent measurement of both soil water content and bulk density using two gamma ray energies, psychrometric measu rement of soil and plant water potentials, and measurement of water status near absorbing roots and in root growth, water flow, and retention in layered soils. This research has contributed to a better understanding of water movement in soil, particularly in stratified soil and in soil near absorbing roots, and to techniques for measurement of water content and potential in soil and plants. He is known for his time-lapse motion picture, “Water Movement in Soil,’’ which is used worldwide as an aid for teaching principles of water retention and flow. He has served as associate editor and editor-in chief of Soil Science Society of America Soil Science Society elects officers Proceedings, now the Soil Science Society of America Journal. Gardner is a Guggenheim Fellow (1964), an ASA Fellow (1966) and an SSSA Fellow (1976). Donald R. Nielsen, professor of soil and water science. Depart ment of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis, became president-elect of the Soil Science Society of America. He will become president of the 6,100- member scientific, educational organizati on at the 1983 annual meeting in Washington, D.C. His principal teaching activity is in soil and water movement and courses designed to integrate physical, chemical and biological processes in soils with mathematical analyses. His principal research embraces laboratory and field investigations of leaching and miscible displacement of inorganic and organic solutes in soils, soil water properties, pesticide behavior in soils, microbiological transformation during leaching, and geostatistical concepts in relation to developing technologies for sam pling field soils. He presently serves on the editorial boards of Irrigation Science, Journal of Soil Science, Soil Science, Outlook in Agriculture, Soil and Tillage Research and Water Resources Research. He holds degrees from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and lowa State University, Ames. Other newly-elected SSSA officers for 1982-83 include; James M. Davison, University of Florida, Gainesville, chairman-elect, Soil Physics; Larry L. Boersma, Oregon State University, Corvallis, board representative, Soil Physics; Philip A. Helmke, University of Wisconsin, Madison, chairman-elect. Soil Chemistry; and M. Ali Tabatabi, lowa State University, Ames, chairman-elect. Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry. Also, Robert L.
