surplus milk production. This
affects all dairy producers, in
cluding those who have not con
tributed to the surplus problem.
The 50-cent deduction will put
extra monies Into the govern
ment’s purse almost immediately, (9
but it does nothing to encourage
more consumption, to reduce
competition from subsidized
imports, or to encourage farmers
to produce less milk.
For an average dairy farmer
with a 60-cow herd, the 50-cent
deduction will result in $4,000 less
income per year. For those that
might be hit with a second 50-cent
deduction next April, the loss
would be more than $B,OOO. If you
have 120 cows, just double these
figures. Ouch!
For Lancaster County alone, the
deductions will amount to $6-12
million, dollars which will not be
available to pump back into our
local economies. That means
fewer jobs, and more welfare
programs to support the unera-
ployed. It also means fewer in
come tax dollars being paid into
the ILS. Treasury.
More—not less
The new program, instead of
discouraging production, will
probably encourage more
production. The deduction may
force some dairy farmers out of
business the marginal
operators, those who are. over
extended, financially-strapped
young farmers trying to get
started, dairy producers who just
happened to be hit with a bad
streak of herd health problems,
and those who are just simply tired
and fed up with the whole mess.
This attrition will help reduce
surplus production. Chances are
though, these losses will probably
be overshadowed by the increased
production of those farmers who
elect to stick with dairying.
As the deductions bite into their CJ
profit margins, dairy farmers will
