Record Feeding Margins
Have you found yourself in the past expanding
your herd when margins were high and feed costs
low, only to find that when it was time to sell the
finished hog, prices had dropped significantly
because all your neighbors expanded when you
did? Clayton feels the 1983 hog situation could be
very similar to this scenario with strong fall prices
in 1982 resulting in herd expansion. This will like
ly be followed with significantly lower prices into
1983. We will give you the evidence in this report.

Weekly 51 Cattle Compared to
previous week’s close Slaughter
Steers and Heifers ended the week
fully 1.00 lower, after having been
down 2.00-3.00 on Monday’s liberal
supply. Sharply reduced midweek
receipts combined with a stronger
undertonein the dressed beef trade
to recoup much of the early week
loss, and the week’s trade ended on
a healthy note. Overall finish
continued quite attractive as far as
dressing percentages and quality
grades were concerned, but
numbers of Yield Grades 4’s still a
problem. Consequently yield grade
2-3 cattle received by far the best,
interest and bids during the period.
Cows 1.50-2.5010wer. Bulls steady.
Steers comprised 35 pet. of the
week’s receipts; Heifers 30 pet;
Cows 6 pet; Feeders 28 pet. Pour
