A22— Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 9,1982 BY DICK ANGLESTEIN MANHEIM He’s the closest thing to being an actual extension of the animal he’s showing. It’s almost as if he and the animal were one living being in the show ring. He’s 19-year-old Jim Stauffer, of 345 Weaver Road, who has won scores of champion rosettes and showmanship trophies over the past six years or so in Lancaster area sheep competition. And Thursday night he collected another pair of top awards. His 100-pound Suffolk ewe, en tered as a sale lamb, won the grand championship of the large sheep show at the Manheim Farm Show. And, Jim was an easy winner in the senior showmanship com petition. Stauffer’s close affinity to the animals he’s showing must have a positive effect on the judge in the ring. And judge, Lee Wagner, Dorset breeder and graduate of Delaware Valley College from Bethlehem, was no exception at Manheim. Stauffer sets up his lambs with amazing speed. He has all four feet planted in perfect position before most showmen have the first spotted. And he has little tricks he con stantly employs to get the best from his lamb. He’s always chucking it under the chin to get the head up and best body ex tension. And if you watch closely you’ll see him tossing little tufts of grass up in front of the lamb to get the utmost in perkiness just at the right moment. With the lamb under complete control at all times, Stauffer moves with a smoothness and grace that rivals the motions of the Manheim arm eu bhow r~ i HENRY K. FISHER INC. He’s the “Doctor J” of sheep showing in Lancaster County and he had his “double dunk” again Thursday night. Reserve championship of the show went to 14-year-old Pam Yeagley with a big Hampshire wether, that previously had taken best of show at Elizabethtown Fair. She’s the daughter of Elvin and Jestena Yeagley, of R 1 Eliza bethjtown. Stauffer and Pam seem to be trading off the grand cham pionships at Manheim in recent years. Stauffer took it two years ago, again with a sale ewe, and Pam won it last year. Stauffer, a sophomore at Penn State in ag business and economics, took a semester off for showing this year - his last in 4-H. He has a flock of 30 or 40 and will be back at State in December. All told, he’s accumulated some 30 grand or reserve rosettes and about 10 showmanship honors.
