DB—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, October 9,1982 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A new breakthrough in crop management practices aimed at maximizing profitability per acre on wheat is now available to Northeast far mers, according to Dr. David Pieczarka, plant pathologist for Agway’s Crops services divisions. The new Integrated Crop Management (ICM) program includes combining adapted seed varieties, increased fertilization rates, fungicides, a growth regulator into a complete “package” for use by farmers. “We saw good results in our ICM wheat demonstration tests this year,” says Pieczarka. “We ex pect yields of over 100 bushels per acre from actual farm operations next year. Working with scientists from two agricultural companies, Mobay and Union Carbide, the crop specialists at Agway have adapted small grain growing techniques from England to a cropping program which includes the control of powdery mildew disease in wheat with fungicide Bayleton and the control of lodging in the high yielding wheat fields with Cerone, - MARKETING TWO CONVENIENT LOCATIONS: 1755 W. During the 1982 growing and harvesting season, farmers, research scientists, and extension personnel have' visited twelve farms where 20-acre controlled experiments with winter wheat were seeded last fall. Dr. Pieczarka says many far mers are showing interest in Agway’s ICM program this fall. He emphasizes that the combination of increased fertility, especially nitrogen, and the timely ap plication of the fungicide Bayleton pnd growth regulator Cerone, at the proper stages of growth in the spring are essential for maximum yields and profitability. “You can’t use just part of this program and expect it to work,” Pieczarka says. “Trying to in crease yields with heavier fer tilization without controlling powdery mildew and lodging can actually cut yields rather than increase them,” he warned.
