LEBANON - Gettini two grain crops a year is 1 the norm in some counties in Penn sylvania, acknowledges Karl Hellerick, of Soil Conservation Service in Lebanon County. “The two-grain crop year is possible in a two year rotation of com and winter grain, double cropped to no-till soybeans. This rotation has many advantages,” says Hellerick. it breaks up the disease, insect and weed cycle, he explains. Planting can be done by no-till or conservation till method which lets crop residue on the soil surface. “Planting no till com in soybean stubble has been suc cessful as has no-till beans. Winter grain can also be planted con servation tillage,” he notes. Strip cropping is one conservation practice that can be installed with 710-out-of-pocket cost and may be needed with ' this intense rotation, along with grassed dnrersions, and cropland terraces in certain cases. Manor Township, earned the champion ewe title in the Suffolk class. Jim, in his seventh year of 4 - H, is a student at Penn State University studying agriculture. Judge for the sheep show was James Diamond of Penn State.
