MINNEAPOLIS, Mn. - The
American Soybean Association
presented its highest honors to
eight individuals during
SOYBEAN EXPO held in Min
neapolis last week. The awards
acknowledge outstanding service
to soybean farmers and the
soybean industry.
In 1981 ASA “Agribusiness
Award’’ was presented to Rohm
and Haas Co. of Philadelphia,
makers of Blazer herbicide. Rohm
and Haas has joined forces with
ASA during the past two years
sponsoring the ASA Blazer
marketing seminars. The com
pany developed the seminars with
ASA because of their commitment
to the soybean industry and a
strong interest in helping farmers
maximize profits.
Honorary life membership in the
American Soybean Association
(ASA) was awarded to. Billy E.
Caldwell and Robert W. Howell.
Billy E. Caldwell is the head of the
crop science department at North
Carolina State University. He has
had a distinguished career of
public service and leadership in
soybean research with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s
Agricultural Research Service.
Robert W. Howell recently
retired as head of the University of
Illinois Department of Agronomy.
His counsel and assistance have
been invaluable in the develop
ment of both the Land of Lincoln
Soybean Association and ASA.
Many of the procedures used in the
ASA research selection process
today were developed with
Howell’s input. Recently ASA
again called on Howell’s broad
industry knowledge and expertise,

has long been interested in a close
working relationship between

and played an active role in the
development of the U.S. soybean
industry and the National Soybean
Processors Association.
. Masataka Komiya, deputy
president of the Japan Soy Sauce
Brewers’ Association, received the
“Foreign Market Development
Award.” Mr. Komiya contributed
greatly to upgrading of soy sauce
quality by publicizing stan
dardized soy sauce production
methods to the entire soy sauce
industry in Japan. He has suc
cessfully persuaded the Japanese
soy sauce industry to use only U.S.
soybean meal. In 1980 this
amounted to the equivalent of
237,000 metric tons of soybeans.
The 1981 recipient of ASA’s
“Production Research Award” is
James R. Wilcox, a research
geneticist at Purdue University.
Wilcox is a research leader with
the USDA-ARS Plant Science Unit
at Purdue’s Agricultural Ex
periment Station. As member and
leader of an interdisciplinary team
of state and federal scientists, he
has participated in the final
evaluations that led to the release
of several high-yielding soybean
varieties.
