advice and guidance have had an
early influence on some of today’s
most prominent cattle producers.
Purdy has judged livestock shows
in England, Scotland, Canada,
Argentina, New Zealand,
Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, and
44 states in the U.S.
A native of Harris, Mo., Purdy
was raised on beef cattle farms in
Missouri, Tennessee, Colorado,
lowa and Indiana. He received bis
bachelor’s degree from Ohio State
where he was a member of the
livestock judging team. Following
graduation he was employed in the
Ohio State Meats Laboratory and
in 1945 was placed in charge of the
university’s beef herds.
In 1954 Purdy joined the staff at
Penn State, where he received his
master’s degree in 1958. Before his
retirement in 1972, Purdy was in
charge of Penn State’s pedigreed
livestock program. Under his
leadership Penn State has shown
more championship beef cattle,
sheep, swine and horses at major
livestock shows than any other
univeriSfy. He also has coached
eight winning livestock judging
teams, including teams that won
the 1946 and 1966 contests at the
International Livestock Exposition
in Chicago.
