HUNTINGDON - To the more
than 250 Grange members at
tending State Grange Leadership
School at Juniata College last
weekend, like agriculture in
Pennsylvania, the Grange is
“growing better.”
The State Grange adopted the
Department of Agriculture’s
theme for this year’s conference,
which focuses on leadership
training for Grange officers and
members.
“The Grange is growing better in
Pennsylvania,” State Master
Charles Wismer told members in
an opening speech. “We’re
growing better in membership, in
legislative success, and in services
for our members.”
Throughout the weekend.
Grange members participated in
workshops on such subjects as
motivation, working with com
mittees, public speaking and
developing strong Grange policy.
Some of these workshops were led
by outside speakers from Juniata
College and Penn State University.

Guest speakers from the
Leadership Banquet held Saturday
evening was Fran Fisher,
assistant athletic director at Penn
State University. Known as the
“voice of Penn State football” for
his colorful radio football
coverage, Fisher talked on the
“total program” at the University.
“Success in each program at
Penn State, such as sports, music
and also agriculture, reflect
positively on the University as a
whole," he said.
At the banquet, a first place
trophy in the State Grange youth
volleyball championship was
presented to a team from
Washington County. Statewide
eliminations had been held during
the leadership seminar.
During the conference, Wismer
announced that the State Grange
will focus on local leadership
training in the next Grange year.
“The State Grange will work
with officers in local Granges to
develop strong leadership in rural
Pennsylvania,” he said.
