As we traveled East we stopped
each day to see one or two places of
interest.. Thus we spent one af
ternoon and evening at Salt Lake
City, Utah.
While there we took a walking
tour through the Temple Square.
The majestic six-spired Temple
dominates the lavish grounds of
this 10-acre site. We heard the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing in
the evening and we examined the
religious exhibits in the North and
South Visitor Centers. They spent a
lot of time explaining their origin
from their sailing to the Americas
as the ancestors of the American
Indian, to the translating of the
plates of gold that they say Joseph
Smith dug up near Palmyra, N.Y.
We also spent time looking
through the largest genealogical
library in the world. The tour of
Brigham Young’s 1853 house, (he
succeeded Smith as leader of the
Mormons) was quite interesting. It

was not open to the public. Here is
wnere his 2V wives and 51 children
lived. The flower surrounding the
public buildings were absolutely
gorgeous. On our way out of town
that night we saw a grass fire that
had just been started by a bolt of
lightning.
We visited a museum in western
Colorado devoted to the Ute In
dians, prairie flowers and animals.
It was over 100 degrees as we
drove through Pike National
Forest and later stopped to go
through the “Cave of Winds” at
Manitou Springs in Colorado.
Walking in the large cave was
anticlimactic to the torturous
climb up a narrow hairpin-curved
road to its entrance in a car whose
motor got overheated.

we stopped at Abilene to see the
Eisenhower chapel, library and
home. Then we drove through flat
land with small oil wells in the
middle of harvested wheat fields.
Their fence posts were slabs of
limestone set up many years ago.
The last two days We drove over
1000 miles through Missouri,
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, W.
Virginia, Maryland and finally
arrived in Pennsylvania. We had
blue skies and sunshine every day
of our trip, but even so, we were
glad to be home.
