New manual covers
weed problem
UNIVERSITY PARK -
“Controlling weeds is the number
one cultural problem facing
nurserymen,” says Larry J.
Kuhns, Extension specialist in
ornamental horticulture at Penn
State. But now there’s a new, easy
to-use manual to help solve weed
problems. It’s called Weed Control
Recommendation for Nursery,
Landscape, and Christmas Tree
Plantings 1982-83, and it’s
available from your County
Cooperative Extension Service
office.
There’s more to controlling
weeds than simply pulling them
out. Some weeds are easier to
control with non-selective her
bicides that are safest if used
before planting. Others are easily
controlled by using pre-emergence

Remove Your Manure Pit Gases With
The New PUMP OUT PIT FAN
Manure storage pits have
been constructed without pro
viding for ventilation of the pit,
particularly in buildings con
structed several years ago when
pit storage was first popular.
A non-ventilated pit results in
a build-up of harmful, caustic
gases, such as carbon dioxide,
hydrogen sulfide, methane,
ammonia and mercaptans.
Hydrogen sulfide and carbon
dioxide are heavier than air and,
as the level of pit waste rises
closer to the slats, the gases are
forced closer to the animals.
Results of inhaling these gases may be deep, fast breathing from CO2.
Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most toxic gases to animals and humans
associated with liquid manure storage. This gas can cause severe
irritation to the eyes and respiratory system and sometimes can result in
death.
It is often difficult to make provisions for ventilating manure storage
pits, but AAA Associates Inc. now offers a simple, sensible and inex
pensive means of ventilating pits.
Virtually all liquid manure storage pits are equipped with pump out
ports. For pump outs that do not extend into the manure, Pump Out Pit
Fans can be adapted to the pump out ports.
The pit fans are housed in foot long 8” or LO” diameter PVC Pipe and
can easily be adapted to existing pump out ports. The fans contain small,
but powerful, highly efficient motors mounted on long lasting aluminum
motor mounts. The propellers are airfoil design, cast-aluminum. All units
are equipped with a vinyl-coated guard complete with plastic butterfly
damper. All hardware and springs are stainless steel.
PVC pipe extensions and 45° elbows are available as accessory items.
For six inch pump out ports, a reducer (8 M to 6”) may be used with fan
model POPF-8 to provide ventilation through six inch pipe.
