Spring Bottom females sweep champion honors
( jQPORTLAND, NY The grand
and reserve grand champion
females of the Fifth Annual Em
pire Classic Polled Hereford Show
was exhibited by Pennsylvania
breeders Frank and Becky Dar
cey. Spring Bottom Farm, Fair
field, Adams County.
Before being selected as the
grand champion female, judge
Phil Taylor of Lawtons recognized
the animal’s qualitites and tagged
her as the show’s .calf champion.
Winning the purple rosette found
the younger Spring Bottom entry
standing over a stablemate that
was selected as the senior and
reserve grand champion of the
female show. Darceys also
exhibited the reserve senior
champion heifer, and were
awarded Premier Breeder and
Exhibitor banners.
Doug Stape of Stanley exhibited
the champion cow/calf pair and
Elm Farm of Richmondville
showed the reserve champion pair.

champion bull and Marshall
Farms the reserve junior cham
pion.
Si-Jo Farm of Pulaski exhibited'
the senior and grand champion
bull and Livingston Farm
exhibited the reserve senior and
reserve grand champion bull.
Butch Marshall of Fort Bryon
exhibited the junior champion L
heifer and his sister Milinda the
reserve junior champion.
The event was sponsored by the
Empire Polled Hereford
Association with 33 breeders
parading 96 head before judge
Taylor.
Each entry was weighed, height
measured and scanogramed for
back-fat. This information was
made available to the exhibitor
and to those attending the show.
Four animals were singled out
for a performance judging contest
with participants estimating
height, weight, backfat and other
measurements and commenting
on the conformation of each
animal. Peter Comerford,
livestock grading specialist for the
New York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets, and
William Greene, Extension
livestock associate at Cornell
University, used the same four
animals for a performance
demonstration. The contest was
won by Jerry Mickelson of
Newfield with his son Dan winning
the junior division contest.
Show chairman was Sue Haynes
of Groton.
