LITTLESTOWN - Guernsey
breeders and their guests from a
five county radius plus Maryland
converged at the farm of Mervin
and David Myers, Finey Lane
Guernseys, Littlestown, last
Tuesday for the York-Adams
Guernsey Breeders’ Association
annual summer meeting.
The event, which traditionally
was held as an evening chicken
bar-b-que, was expanded this year
to include judging contests and
farm visits to Finey Lane and
Green Manor Guernseys, which is
owned and opered by John and
Ginger Myers also of littlestown.
Finey Lane Guernseys has had
the highest fat-production herd for
the breed in the state for the past
two years and was high herd for
milk in 1980. In 1981 they were third
for milk and first for fat and
protein in Pennsylvania with 56.6
cows averaging 13,947 pounds of
milk and 694 pounds of fat. Their
1980 fat average of 705 pounds of
butterfat made them the first
Guernsey herd in the state to break
the 700-pound fat barrier.
Mervin Myers explained that at
Finey Lane they are “very but
terfat conscience and choose their
bulls accordingly.” Myers stressed
that with component pricing on the
horizon high testing milk would be
imperative for capitalizing on this
marketing trend.

York-Adams Guernsey breeders meet
convened at the farm of John and
Ginger Myers, Green Manor
Guernseys. Prior to marriage,
John had been in partnership with
his father Mervin, and Ginger had
been employed by the Penn
sylvania Guernsey Breeders’
Association as a field represen
tative.
A relatively young operation
started in December 1980, Green
Manor Stables had one cow that was
of special interest to many of the
guests Sniders Prince Lily. This
record-making daughter of
Lyreme May Rose Prince has
made three consecutive national
class leading records and has won
the Tarbell Trophy twice as the
breed’s highest fat producer.
Prizes donated by local agri
businesses and A.l. units provided
the awards for those who bested
their competitors in the judging
contest. Serving as official judge
was Lee Yost, Business Manager
for the Fa. Guernsey Breeders’
Association.
In the Guernsey judging contest,
two perfect marks were scored in
the Men’s Division with Phil
Laughman, York, and mike John,
Lancaster both scoring 100 points.
Capturing the Ladies’ Division
with a score of 98 points was Ruth
Benedict John, Lancaster. Shawn
Lee Brown, Mercersburg, won the
Youth Division.
