honor students. The oldest son, Jeff
has returned following graduation
from Penn State to now manage
the family farm. Three more are
still in college pursuing dairy and
business careers, and the fifth is in
high school. Though Janet does not
expect them all to return to the
operation at this time, they all own
cattle under Maplevale Associates.
The store and farm are a single
proprietorship with Janet as the
sole owner.
Finding the need for outside
diversion from the pressures of
family and business following
Gene’s death, Janet turned her
energies to where she felt she could
contribute her talents. She has
served on the Brookville School
Board since 1972 and is presently
its chairman. She is active in the
Pa. Guernsey Breeders’
Association and has served as
state youth chairman since 1966.

Maplevale
She is hostess for the area
Strawberry Fe c tival held annually
in June at Mi-plevale where the
local dairy association has served
as many as 2700 people
strawberries and ice cream in one
day. Though she is the first to
admit that she is behind in her
dairy breeding genetics, fellow
state Guernsey breeders, who
comprise the second largest state
for numbers of registrations'and
transfers of Guernsey cattle, have
considerable faith in her business
abilities. In 1980 they elected Janet
as their national director to the
Board of the American Guernsey
Cattle Club. She is the first woman
ever to serve on that Board.
Janet has worked hard to keep
her family and business on the top
side. When asked what new
challenge she plans to tackle next,
she chuckles, “I’m not sure.
Maybe the kids will let me work for
them sometime."
