    FAST FOOD FACTS
Fast food restaurants are part of
the American scene. Between 1970
and 1980, sales increased by more
than 300 percent, and today almost
150,000 fast food restaurants cover
the United States. How costly are
fast foods to both our pocketbooks
and our diets?
Many people believe that fast
foods are no more expensive than
similar foods prepared at'home.
However, fast food is more ex
pensive if no value is placed on
labor or overhead in the home. In
1979 a meal consisting of a special
hamburger, French fries, and a
soft drink cost $1.61 at a fast food
restaurant. An equivalent meal
prepared at home cost 83 cents.
The 78 cents difference paid for
Q labor, energy use, overhead, and
restaurant atmosphere.
Contrary to popular opinion, fast
food is not nutritionally worthless.
The potential of fast food to con
tribute nutrients to the diet is
limited primarily by the variety of
menu items available and by the
combinations of foods chosen.
'die most typical meal at fast
food restaurants consists of a
hamburger, chicken or fish,
French fries, and a soft drink.
Another popular choice is pizza
and a soft drink. While these meals

are often low in vitamin A, several
B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium,

stituting milk or a milk shake for
the soft drink, and adding cheese to
the hamburger or green pepper to
the pizza improve nutritional
balance.
Recently, the types of food
available have increased. Fresh
fruits and vegetables, now offered
on salad bars, are good sources of
vitamins A and C as well as a
number of minerals. As more
variety is offered on fast food
menus, their potential to provide a
balanced diet will increase. But it
is still the individual’s selections
that determine whether fast foods
make a significant contribution of
nutrients (other than calories) to
the diet.
BUYING FURNITURE
With the price of furniture today
you cannot afford to make a
mistake. But it is not always easy
to determine if a piece is well
made. Price is no clue...sometimes
the shoddiest merchandise costs
the most. Although
difficult, it is not impossible to
select quality furniture. Here are
four ways to help you judge
upholstered furniture. The first is

USED As and RDAs. Actually,
USRDAs are based on the RDAs
says Dr. Anna V.A. Resurreccion,
Extension nutrition specialist at
Penn State.
For the past 30 years, the federal
government and various qualified
scientific groups have been trying
to devise a way consumers can
judge how much of what nutrient
they should have, and what
nutrients they’re getting from the
food they eat. Our knowledge of
nutritional needs and sources is still
incomplete, but the USRDAs and
RDAs are expressions of what we
do know.
to examine the tailoring ... the
seams should be strong and
straight, the cushions should fit
snuggly in the comers, and the
fabric should match and there
should be no lumps anywhere.
Next, examine the fabric. Tightly
woven, knit or tufted fabrics wear
the longest. Also look for fabrics
that have been treated, to resist
water spills and stains. Con
struction is the third feature to
check, but it is a hard one because
most of it is hidden. Since you
cannot use your eyes for this test,
ask lots of questions. Find out
about warranties and materials
used. The last test is the comfort
test. Sit on the piece. If it is com
fortable and passed the other
quality tests, you may have found
a purchase you won’t regret.

Understand USRDA and RDA
The Food and Nutrition Board of
the National Academy of Sciences
has established Recommended
Dietary Allowances for essential
nutrients healthy people need at
different ages, at given weights,
and under certain conditions such
as pregnancy or lactation.
The USRDAs stand for the
United States Recommended Daily
Allowance as defined by the Food
and Drug Administration for the
purpose of food labeling. They are
used to translate RDAs into usable
form. USRDAs, are calculated
according to the highest RDA
levels for a nutrient and are ex
pressed as a percentage of
nutrients found in foods.
Current laws require USRDA
labeling on all foods that make a
nutritional claim and all foods that
have added nutrients. In addition,
many food manufacturers have
included nutrition information on
their labels on a voluntary basis.
The nutrition label tells you how
many calories and how much
protein, carbohydrate, and fat are

contained in a serving of the
product. The label also tells you
the USRDAs of protein and at least
seven important vitamins
and minerals.
Labels are one of the best guides
to product composition, nutrition
information, and economy.
Comparing the labels of similar
foods can help you determine
which foods are good sources of a
nutrient, decide which is the best
buy for your money, and which has
the highest nutrient density. From
labeling information you can also
calculate the nutrient content of a
serving in relation to its calories.
The nutrient density of the food
you eat is especially important if
you are trying to cut back on the
number of calories you consume.
Too often, cutting calories also
means not getting essential
nutrition you need for energy,
growth, maintenance and repair.
Eat a balanced diet chosen
from the basic food groups and
consult the nutrition label of the
food you eat to be sure.
