Keep ponds safe
the ÜbDA Soil Con
servation Service in
fatbanon County
When a pond is con
structed. it is a natural
recreation center for
those who lice near it
and it is also often used
for swimming, fishing,
boating, or skating
The unfortunate
feature of a pond is that
it is also a body of water
in which drownings can
occur Drownings are
the outstanding non
motor vehicle cause of
accidential deaths
among people in the
active age groups,
especially children
These deaths, by
drowning, are due to
swimming accidents,
falls into the water
while working or
playing on or near
bodies of water, and
accidents involving
small boats
The Soil Conservation
Service incorporates
safety features into its
recommended design of
a pond SCS also
recommends that such
safety measures can be
accomplished econom
ically during the con
struction of the pond,
say s Whitworth These
measures include
evenly grading of spoil
areas, avoiding steep
slopes and holes in the
pond, removing snags,
big rocks and trash that
could be a hazard to
swimmers and boats
Man> other safet>
features can be done by
pond owners without
much expense Some of
them are life-saving
equipment placed near
the pond, use of good
equipment if boating is
done, and someone with
the first aid training
should be near when
boating and swimming
takes place
For more information
on ponds or pond safety,
contact the local Soil
Conservation Service
office
