Hallowed for the im
plementation of new
swine health rules
requiring identification
of feeder pigs, market
hogs and breeding
swine.
The regulations,
which took effect May
19, are designed to help
control the movement of
swine in the state in
order to control the
spread of contagious
diseases to other herds
“The need for an
identification system
for hogs is long over
due,” said state director
Carl L. Kaufman. “We
are very pleased to see
Secretary Hallowell
implementing this
program. Farmers
Umon hog farmers have
advocated a mandatory
identification system
because of problems
with tuberculosis and
pseudorabies affecting
their herds after sales
With these regulations
in place, diseased swine
can be traced back to
the source farm.”
At its annual meeting
in February, delegates
to the Farmers Union
convention approved a
mandatory iden
tification system for
swine The family farm
organization also
recommended that all
breeding stock offered
for sale be checked for
pseudorabies within 30
days prior to the date of
sale.
Every producer and
swine finishing
operation in the state
will be issued a herd
identification number
which will be registered
with the Agriculture
Department, according
to Secretary Hallowed.
The identification can
be m the form of an ear
tattoo, backslap tattoo
or ear tag Tattooing is
the most reliable
method of permanent
identification
The family farm
organization urged all
hog farmers to contact

Agriculture for ad
