related items. “I always said,
‘Someday I’d like to have a pair of
mules to play with.’ ” Well, just a
few weeks ago, be got a pair of
mules, Kate and Rose, and he has
been playing with them since, to
the delight of grandchildren and
friends.
He says, “Mules have something
horses don’t have. When they
cultivated they had a smaller foot
and didn’t tramp as many stalks
out, and a mule was smart enough
not to overeat and never to step on
your foot.” His fondness for mules
is a result of having started in
fanning with mules.
He re-assembled some of the
harnesses he collected, hitched the
mules to a prized Studebaker
wagon, and now goes all over the
farm.
In retirement. Grace is busy too.

Association will host the third
annual Iroquois Awards Banquet
Thursday, May 13, at lovely

Square. The affair will honor the
state’s leading breeders and the
breeders of all Pennsylvania-bred
stakes-winners of 1981.

Members of Stehman United
Methodist Church, Abe recently
retired after 25 years of teaching
Sunday School, but continues to
serve on the trustee board.
Another talent of which this
seventy year old man is proud: “I
can still stand on my head.”
For Abe and Grace their
retirement years are ones of en
joying the rewards of bard work,
and of watching their grand
children learn the responsibilities
and pleasures of work in the
tobacco fields.
Grandparents Day is still
several months off, but these two
are honored every day by their
grandchildren who share in a
treasured way of life.
Longwood’s elegant ballroom.
Dinner will follow at 7:15 and will
be catered by the esteemed Jimmy
Duffy’s.
The banquet will be preceded by
the PHBA’s annual meeting.
Business will include a review of
the Breeding Fund in 1961 and a
projection of its outlook for ’B2. The
meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. at
New Bolton Center, Kennett
Square.
