YORK A subsurface (tile)
drainage system is only as good as
its outlet. And the investment of a
little time, paint, and a steel post
can help fanners protect sub
stantial investments in subsurface
drainage systems, according to
Lee B. Bentz, soil conservationist,
USDA, Soil Conservation Service,
York. ' >
The key to good subsurface
drainage system is a free flowing
outlet, says Bentz. However with
the passing years following the
original installation, many outlets
become “lost” or damaged.
Dense vegetation, silt from
flooding, livestock trampling,
snow plow damage, etc. all
combine to clog or obhviate the
outlet’s location. The result is a
drainage system that is less ef
ficient or ceases to function
altogether, he notes.
Evidence of a malfunctioning
drainage system includes a stream
of water that pops up in the field
where there was none before or an
area that remains wet long after
the rest of the field has dried out,
Bentz explains. To correct or
prevent this problem, the outlet
must be returned to a free flowing
condition.
But how do you find a “lost”
