The Prepare your mare for breeding NEWARK, Del. - A successful horse breeding program depends upon a properly conditioned mare, says C. M. Reitnour, Un iversity of Delaware Extension equine specialist. Proper nutrition, a sound program of preventive medicine, and adequate exercise are of utmost importance in con ditioning. A good program of preventive medicine include should prevention and control of internal parasites as well as immunization against diseases, says the specialist. Worm mares every six to eight weeks with recom mended anthelmintics to prevent or control such troublesome in ternal parasites as hots, strongyles, ascands, and pinworms. Vac cinate the animals against tetanus, eastern and western en cephalomyelitis, and possibly upper respiratory problems such as equine viral rhmopneumomtis, Rei tnour advises. To prepare a mare for breeding, feed her a well-balanced grain ration containing ap proximately 15 percent crude protein, about 75 percent total digestible nutrients, plus high quality alfalfa or alfalfa grass hay. If good quality roughage is not available, make sure the horse has a sup plemental source of vitamins and minerals, Reitnour says. The highest con ception rates occur when mares are in excellent physical condition neither too fat nor too thin, the specialist says. Mares that are gaming weight going into the breeding season conceive more easily than those that are extremely over weight or underweight. For adequate- exercise mares should be turned out, lunged, ndden or meeting begins at 8 p.m. and is opened to the pubhe.
