Breeders hold
barn meeting

PEACH BOTTOM - The
Southeast Regional Pennsylvania
Ayrshire Club held their annual
meeting last Saturday at the farm
of Dr. and Mrs. Larry Schmuck.
According to President Kennard
Henley, HI, of Cochranville, the
group includes Ayrshire breeders
from the southeast area of the
state, including Lancaster,
Chester, Lebanon, York, Berks
and other neighboring counties.
Henley’s father explained that the
group formed 15 years ago as a
regional club.
The group’s activities include an
annual evening banquet in
November, a summer picnic and a
spring barn meeting. Betty
Henley, club secretary, said there
are presently 35 members in the
club.
During
Ayrshire breeders held a milk
identification contest conducted by
the Lancaster County Dairy
Princess, Deb Greider. They

Willow Street, never made it to the field day
held at the Warren Schmuck farm. Peach
Bottom, due to the weather. Schmuck, right,
milks 57 cows, mostly Ayrshires.

participated in a judging contest,
awarded a calf to an FFA member
of the club, and held a business
meeting.
Warren Schmuck explained that
the farm’s millking herd contains
57 cows, nearly all Ayrshire. There
are a total of 130 dairy animals at
the farm. The meeting was held in
the 4-year-old free-stall barn
equipped with a double-four
herringbone parlor.
Colleen Spahr, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Wayne Spahr, 4 Oak
Lane, Willow Street, was selected
to receive the FFA calf donated by
Ann and Nelson Young, Tim
berlawn Farm, West Grove.
Colleen is a sophomore at Penn
Manor High School and currently
has a dairy animal as her project.
She will be keeping her newly
acquired calf along with her FFA
heifer at a neighboring farm since
residence.
County Agent Glen Shirk
assisted in the day’s activities and
Dave Hamish acted as judge.
