Digestation Studies in the Metabolism Unit Help
Lead To New and Improved Milking Rations.
Both basic and applied research are part of
Purina's Dairy research program. One important
facility at the Dairy Research Center is the six cow
Metabolism Unit. Here daily feed and water intake, as
well as milk production, are carefully measured along
with total excrement. These measurements enable
Purina scientists to study the cow’s digestion and
accurately determine the nutritional value and
utilization of feed ingredients. Data from this
research is especially valuable in developing new and
improved High Performance Milking rations.

Since 1928 Purina has conducted continuous Dairy research at
the Purina Research Farm near Gray Summit, Missouri. Purlna’s
reputation for leadership in Dairy research stems largely from
advanced research techniques and methods used by Purina Dairy
scientists.

Fistulated Cows Furnish Information Vital to Im
proved Feed Efficiency and Top Performance.
The removable “window” or fistula in the side of
the cow in the metabolism stall was inserted
surgicajly and painlessly allowing the cow to calve
and function normally. Laboratory analyses of rumen
samples taken through the opening provide a broad
range of vital data used in studying rumen micro
organisms and their influence on such functions as
protein synthesis, fermentation, butterfat production
and forage utilization.
Information from these studies helps Purina
scientists develop rations that make more efficient
use of feed ingredients for maximum income over
feed cost.
