D24—Lancaster Fannins, Saturday, March 6,1982 Injuries high for farmers. UNIVERSITY PARK Once eyery four years the average farm laborer can expect to be injured severely enough to require medical attention. “In fact,-says Dennis Murphy, Penn State Extension farm safety specialist,” agricultural workers are much more susceptible to accident and injury than in dustrial workers. “The agricultural workers, unlike their counterparts in industry usually operate with a minimum of supervision and may not be adequately, trained, for the job.” The incidence of work related injury or illness resulting in days away from work is 2Vis times greater for agricultural workers .than the average' for r all in dustries. Murphy notes that voluntary, not-for-profit organizations, like the Pennsylvania Farm Safety Council, help to reduce the accident toll in farm families, on and off the job. The Council provides safety services and materials, such as technical, educational information, to keep agricultural workers alert to possible hazards and to help prevent accidents. - "it is necessary to go beyond, engineered safety to protect far mers against ac cidents," says Murphy. “We must educate the individual farm and ranch residents and workers -about the importance of accident prevention." Farm _ safety specialists recognize three elements of safety—man,- machine, and environment. •'Centroling man is by tar the most difficult. especially in farm safety,” Murphy says. ★★★★★★★★★★★★ Jf J Holstein Herd for Sale f * by Private Treaty + * * yL All Registered )f yL 60 cows, 13 bred heifers T 2 Buyer may select minimum of 65 head, yt ?
