D2o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 6,1982 NEWARK, Del. - This year’s Delmarva Hatchery and Breeder Flock Management Short Course has been scheduled for Wed nesday, March 24, at the DelMarVa Convention Hall in Oelmar,Md. The -program will cover a number of topics which should be of interest, including energy savings for hatcheries, breeder vaccination and monitoring Roaming dogs plague deer UAKKISBUKq - Free-roaming dogs are taking a toll on,Penn sylvania's deer herd -this year, according to district game protec tors. While it’s still too early to compile statistics, officers say the total number ol deer lost to canines will be considerably higher than usual. In a “nor mal” Pennsylvania winter, about 601) wtutetails are lost to dogs. Most, dogs involved are household pets. Not all of the Canutes are big. Many of the culprits are curs, terriers and other breeds smaller than beagles. While recent rains helped cut snow and ice m some parts ot the state, depths ot up to two feet are reported in the mountains. Just about everywhere, the snow is capped with a hard crust or ice. Legs are bruised ,or broken when sharp deer hooves cut through the crust. It’s difficult tor a wlutetail to' even walk through crusted snow. Dogs, generally lighter in weight with relatively large, padded feet, are able to run with little difficulty, but deer just can’t gel away from dogs in such cir cumstances, and are easily pulled down. At peak condition, a deer can run taster than a dog for a short distance, but canies have more stamina and can run down any deer. In winter, with natural food supplies in short supply, when the whitetail is weak, it is simply no match tor any dog. Dog owners are warned that they will be prosecuted by wildhte conservation othcers it their pets chase deer. GIGANTIC MUCTION Lancaster Farming's CLASSIFIEDS Delmarva poultry course set for March 24 programs, broiler vaccmation and monitoring programs, hatching egg breakout, motivation and communication, causes and effects of egg size and texture, proper use of pesticides, innovative feeding programs, plus a first-hand report on an evaporative cooling system.
