Water outlook appears good
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Prospects are favorable for
adequate to abundant water
supplies in most of the West this
summer, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture and the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad
ministration reports.
Norman A. Berg, chief of
USDA’s Soil Conservation Service,
said his agency’s first snowpack
surveys of the season indicate that
most rivers in the region should
receive normal to above normal
runoff when snowmelts begins in
the spring.

coupled with heavy early winter
snowfall over most of the West,

However, below normal runoff

Arizona and New Mexico.
Several late December storms
dumped snow on the mountains of
Oregon and California. These
storms moved inland to the central
Rockies, resulting in excellent
snowpack for Nevada, Idaho,
Colorado and Utah.

season had passed by Jan. 1, Berg

The Soil Conservation Service
surveys snowpack and monitors
snowmelt at 1,600 sites throughout
the West and reports each month
from January through May. USDA
specialists, in cooperation with the
National Weather Service of the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administation, U.S. Department of
Commerce, analyze the data and
issues monthly forecasts of runoff
and water supplies.
Snow accumulated during winter
and spring provides about *2
