NFO donates
food to Poland
CORNING, lowa The board of
directors .of National Fanners
Organization has passed a
resolution to accept from members
on a voluntary basis a total of
300,000 pounds of beef, pork and
powdered milk and make it
available to the needy of Poland.
The shipment, which will include
100,000 pounds each of pork, beef*
and powdered milk, will be made
available to two church
organizations for transportation
and distribution in Poland. They
are Church World Service, a
broad-based organization of
churches, and Catholic Relief
Fund, both headquartered in New
York.
DeVon Woodland, president of
National Fanners from Blackfoot,
Idaho, said plans Call for the
program to be completed no later
than Feb. 15.
Woodland said Tom Conrad, a
national director from Ohio, has
set up an office in National Far
mers national headquarters in
Corning, lowa, to coordinate
voluntary donations of the food
through state organizations.
The site chosen for slaughtering
and processing the meat will be
announced later. The meat will be
canned to insure its preservation
until it reaches the Polish people.
Powdered milk is not a perishable
product.
The two organizations chosen to
handle the transportation were
picked because of the high regard
in which they are held by other
charitable organizations. Mem
bers who volunteered to donate
food indicated that they want to be
sure it reaches the Polish people,
and the two organizations guar
antee that it wili.
Many charitable organizations..
have indicated that they will ac
cept only cash contributions and
then purchase food in the
European countries for
distribution in Poland.
Because of current economic
conditions, farmers and ranchers
are short on money, Woodland
said. However they do have food
that they are willing to donate.
> “We realize that 300,000 pounds
of food will only assit the brave
people of Poland in all of their
problems,” Woodland said. “Even
though American agriculture is
facing many economic pressures,
members of National Fanners
wanted to let the people of Poland
know that we care.”
