Certainly the major reasons for hutches are their value to calf health and survival of young
calves. However, now we would like to share with you the advantages of our shelters over
home built structures.
Plywood hutches are often heavy and awkward to move. Shell Valley calf shelters only
weigh about 110 lbs. and can be moved easily. Their structure allows nesting while tran
sporting and storing.
The initial investment of plywood shelters is somewhat less, but often not considered in this
cost are labor, maintenance, and replacement costs. Wooden hutches usually need to be
painted every two to three years. Our boat-like construction is virtually maintenance free. A
good plywood shelter will last 6 to 10 years. There is no reason our shelter wljl not last 4 to 6
times as long, being fire resistant and 100% repairable.
Not only is our unit easy to dean, transport, and store; fiberglass is a natural insulator. It’s
white gelcoat finish keeps calves cool during the hot summer and warm through the winter.
We hope you will share our conclusion, as many do, that fiberglass shelters are long-lasting,
more economical, and offer the best prospects for good health and survival of young calves.
