Donald Harold Welk,
New test gives more
accurate fertilization
s
for alfalfa
MADISON, Wis. - and cut. Schulte says,
Farmers may soon be “We hope to use this
able to achieve higher process on commercial
alfalfa yields using the alfalfa this year ”
Diagnostic and
Recommendation In
tegrated System. With
this relatively new
approach to plant
analysis, farmers will
fertilize more ac
curately and
economically, says E.E.
Schulte, University of
Wisconsin-Madison soil
scientist.
DRIS is a system of
diagnosing crop
problems by measuring
several factors that
may affect crop growth.
“We concentrate on
plant analysis and also
look at soil tests and
climatic variations,”
says Schulte.
Graduate student
T.E. Erickson and other
soil scientists are
determining optimal
nutrient ratios for
nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium, sulfur and
boron in alfalfa tissue.
(These nutrients are
especially important in
Wisconsin.) The soil
scientists stress ratios
between nutrients will
provide better norms
than simply finding
percentages of each.
“Once we analyze a
wide range of samples
differing in nutrient
composition, we can
develop norms and
apply diem to fields in
different locations and
development states, and
to different varieties,”
says Schulte, who is
building the data base
from alfalfa yield ex
periments around the
country.
DRIS norms are now
available for corn,
wheat, potatoes and
soybeans. This ap
proach more accurately
determines just what
nutrient or nutrients
will increase yields.
“DRIS identifies
excesses as well as the
most limiting
nutrients,” adds
Schulte. “It saves
money ”
The currently used
critical-level approach
to fertilizing isn’t as
versatile as DRIS. At
present, analyzing a
specific portion of a
certain-aged plant is
critical in evaluating
nutrient needs.
With DRIS, farmers
will give the tester a soil
and alfalfa sample, and
say when it was planted
