There is currently no standard accurate method of determining the developmental stage of a sun flower plant. A new staging method has recently been developed at North Dakota State University, , ac cording to Albert Schneiter, NDSU agronomist. Schneiter points out that accurate determination otthe growth stage of a plant is im portant for proper pesticide and herbicide application and for determining yield losses due to hail. “We run into problems in telling someone when to apply an in secticide or ' a herbicide or describing a certain stage of growth,” he said. “More accuracy is needed to avoid ineffective 305 305 305 305 305 305 305 305 305 305 305 302 305 5-5 5-8 ;ses 305 305 5-10 3-4 ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING AGRICULTURAL RESIDENTIAL • INDUSTRIAL - 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE -STANDBY GENERATORS SALES & SERVICE -40’BUCKET TRUCK •- 7 - BLOWN CELLULOSE INSULATION Clecbuc, Since 1952 CALL (717) 653-2068 Rt. 230 W. The new staging method in volves dividing sunflower plant development into either vegetative or reproductive stages. The vegetative stage is determined by counting the number of true leaves on the plant four centimeters or longer while the reproductive stage by looking at the develop ment of the flower. “A plant could be a foot and a half tall and have six leaves or 20 3.4 38 40 334 Ub 834 24,741 20,529 21.081 793 22,726 829 21,288 837 18;451 887 763 20,942 18,493 839 22,242 822 ' 20,843 768 815 837 764 3.5 32 3.5 3.6 22,097 25,226 24,239 21,283 759 19.908 817 786 24.464 23,745 865 822 22,282 18,160 cMaudUoAm leaves,” Schneiter said. “The vegetative stages could be quite different though.” He pointed out that a length standard for the leaves had to be set to avoid confusing situations in which one person might count only the big leaves while another would count all of the small leaves surrounding the bud. "Currently there is much con fusion as to what is meant by 50 percent bloom for example,” Schneiter said. “One person might describe SO percent bloom as when the plants have half of their yellow ray flowers showing while another 1 might describe it as when 50 percent of the area in the head has flowered. Between the two there may be a week or'lo days dif ference. In the case of a hailstorm, for example, the amount of in surance paid would be quite 'dif ferent. The new staging method is simple and more accurate than current methods, commented Schneiter. “People will try it and hopefully they’ll use it.’ ’ Schneiter’s research was sponsored by a grant from the National Crop Insurance Association.
